Mixer was brought in to explore a broad range of accessories that optimize function and enhance the automotive experience. We studied the challenges of loading and unloading kayaks and bicycles on roof racks and visualized possibilities of utilizing the front passenger seat for more than just seating.
Loading unwieldy items like bicycles or paddle boards onto a roof rack can be a challenge. Our team developed a modular roof rack system and ‘‘outrigger’ accessory that provides a secondary set of sliding rails to help make this process easier. The rails extend beyond the edge of the vehicle, allowing for a less awkward lift, and more room to secure gear.
To take advantage of the rails system, we also brainstormed other accessories such as cargo bins and a dual-purpose step ladder / storage locker.
The front passenger seat is often unoccupied. This presents opportunities to make storage more flexible and tending to children in the back more practical. Our team brainstormed creative possibilities that led to sketches and then to functional mechanical models. We also studied new ways to store phones and cup holders so that space can do double-duty as needed.
